Talking Points from the
NRW 9th Annual Conference:
Thanks to everyone who attended the NRW 9th Annual Conference event! We hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed both the program and the opportunity to socialize with other writers. Here's a few links you may want to reference as per today's presentation. Click on the images or links for easy access to the featured items.
Victorine wrote the first draft for Not What She Seems in 1-week while recovering from an injury. She was thrilled to discover critiquecircle.com...an online destination where writers can post 1 chapter and ask for feedback. Victorine received that feedback, but kept revising that manuscript -- even changing the killer in the novel. The effort landed her on the New York Times Best Seller list!
One helpful resource she discovered with her venture was Joe Konwrath's Newbie's Guide to Publishing blog. When it came to the point where she wanted to print her novels on demand, she has had success with createspace.com and referenced the $39 PRO plan that allows for several options. The website at kindleboards.com was also mentioned during her presentation as a great place for networking.
When it comes to covers, Victorine had some great advice tips for aspiring e-authors: design a cover that looks bood in black and white and also as a thumbnail picture. This is especially great for shoppers with electronic readers. If and when you are ready to upload that first book, check out the preview for the book to make sure the formatting is as you would like.
When it comes to cover art, kindleboards.com is a good forum -- like a yellow pagees for authors that lists services, editors, cover artists, format experts and lots of other contacts you might need. Victorine has enjoyed working with HazardEditing.
Victorine's second book, The Overtaking, is now available.
Her novelette, The Pretend Date is also available for her fans to enjoy from various retailers, including Amazon and from Smashwords.com.
Also worthy of note is a program called Calibre, a program that boasts a free download and can convert files somewhat easily for e-publication. Features include the ability to embed the cover and look at output files.
